On his fourth appearance at the Chatauqua Institution in 1905, Theodore Roosevelt stated that Chautauqua was \u201cthe most American thing in America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chautauqua is an adult education and cultural movement that originated in 1874 on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in western New York state. It consists of lectures, concerts, literary activities, recreation and arts during a summer long season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1870s & 1880s Chautauqua became so popular that attendees built cottages on the 750 acre site. Today. 7,500 people are in attendance daily at Chautauqua. The most notable \u201cinfluencers\u201d of thought, political science, religion, the arts, philosophy and the environment have appeared on the Chautauqua stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the presenters have include Ken Burns, Amelia Earhart, Booker T. Washington, Steven Forbes, William Jennings Bryan, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, William Howard Taft, Bill Clinton, Susan B. Anthony, Julia Ward Howell, Jane Addams, Thurgood Marshall, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sandra Day O\u2019Conner, Mark Twain, Salman Rushdie, David McCullough, Wynton Marsalis, Ella Fitgerald, Duke Ellington, and the list goes on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the frequent lecturers at Chatauqua is Gary Moore. Dr. Moore has been invited to speak at Chautauqua a record fifteen times. His first lecture was during \u201cWorld Health Week\u201d in 2011. He spoke on \u201cThe History and Evolution of the Outhouse<\/em>.\u201d This lecture was so popular he was asked to repeat it in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chautauqua Institution celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024. Dr. Moore was the wrap up speaker for the summer long celebration. His presentation was \u201cGo Ye into All the World: Stories of the Chautauqua Movement and its Legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after Chautauqua was established, copycat Chautauquas sprung up across the nation. For towns too small to have a Chautauqua, there were \u201ctent Chautauquas\u201d that traveled a railroad circuit across the country including North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this presentation Moore will share the Chautauqua story including the impact it has made on America and the world. He will also share his experience as a Chautauqua speaker.
